Formentera has a reputation for being expensive, and in August it is. But the island still has a small supply of family-run hostals, apartments and simple hotels, concentrated around La Savina port, Es Pujols and the villages of Sant Ferran and Sant Francesc. With a scooter or a bike, staying in a budget hotel does not put you far from anything: the island is 19 km long and every beach is a few minutes away.
Key takeaways
- Outside July-August: €70 to €95 a night in a hostel or small guesthouse, €95 to €140 for a studio. In July-August, allow €110 to €150 and €160 to €240 (prices from our budget guide).
- Where to look: La Savina for the ferry, Es Pujols for the beach and nightlife, Sant Ferran for a village atmosphere.
- Book in winter for the summer: the cheapest places are also the first to fill up.
- We stayed at Hostal Pepe, in Sant Ferran, in 2025: a local institution, simple and very central. The villages are compared in our guide where to stay in Formentera.

Hostal Illes Pitiüses, the budget base in Sant Ferran
The Illes Pitiüses is a practical, cheap base in the middle of Formentera. From Sant Ferran, you can reach everywhere: Es Pujols, Migjorn, La Savina or La Mola are all a few kilometres away. To place the villages and plan the rest of your trip, our practical Formentera guide covers it all.
The hostal is on Sant Ferran’s main avenue, 150 m from Fonda Pepe, the village’s historic bar. Es Pujols is less than 3 km away, Sant Francesc just over 3 km, and the port about ten minutes by car.

- On Google Maps: get directions
- Booking rating: 8.1/10
- Price: from €69 a night, full details in our hotel page

My verdict: Sant Ferran is in the middle of everything: in 10 minutes you are in Es Pujols, Migjorn or on the road to La Mola. It is an ideal base if you change beach every day, and one of the few places open out of season. There are more locals, and the village is quite lively and very central.
Hotel Rosamar, a small beach hotel in Sa Roqueta
The Rosamar is an unpretentious, very well rated small beach hotel. People come for the sea at the door and a breakfast that guests often mention.
The hotel is on Llevant beach, in the Sa Roqueta area, about 1 km from the centre of Es Pujols according to the hotel. Platja de ses Canyes is 600 m away, the Estany Pudent lagoon 800 m, and Ses Illetes 3 km.
- Address: Zona Sa Roqueta (Platja de Llevant), Venda des Molí de s’Estany, 3172, 07871 Es Pujols
- On Google Maps: get directions
- Booking rating: 9.0/10
- Price: from €70 a night, full details in our hotel page

My verdict: Llevant beach is one of the wildest near Es Pujols. Staying in Sa Roqueta means having it on foot early in the morning, before the boats arrive. I recommend it!
Hostal Capri, low prices in the centre of Es Pujols
Hostal Capri is a simple address in the heart of Es Pujols. You stay here to go out on foot in the evening and be on the beach in 2 minutes, without paying seafront hotel prices.
The guesthouse overlooks Avenida Miramar, Es Pujols’ street of restaurants and bars. Es Pujols beach is 150 m away. La Savina port is about ten minutes by car, and buses leave a few steps away.
- Address: Avenida Miramar, 41, 07871 Es Pujols
- On Google Maps: get directions
- Booking rating: 8.5/10
- Price: from €81 a night, full details in our hotel page

My verdict: Es Pujols is a village where you do everything on foot: the beach in the morning, restaurants and bars in the evening. It is Formentera’s resort: if you want some buzz without hiring a scooter, this is where to stay. I remember an incredible sunset there in October.
Aparthotel Almaris (ex-Hostal Alemania), 60 m from Es Pujols beach
The former Hostal Alemania has changed its name, not its location. It is one of the closest addresses to the beach in Es Pujols, simple and well rated.
The aparthotel is on Avenida Miramar, in the heart of Es Pujols. Es Pujols beach is 60 m away, and restaurants and bars are within walking distance. La Savina port is about 6 km away.
- Address: Avinguda Miramar, 60, 07871 Es Pujols
- On Google Maps: get directions
- Booking rating: 9.1/10
- Price: from €89 a night, full details in our hotel page

My verdict: you are one minute from the water, in the heart of Es Pujols. The big advantage: no need for a vehicle to enjoy the beach and the lively evenings.
Hotel Lago Dorado, peace and quiet by the Estany des Peix
The Lago Dorado relies on its surroundings more than its rooms. The view over the lagoon is superb, the pool large and the calm total. It is an ideal base in mid-season.
The hotel sits on the edge of the Estany des Peix, the saltwater lagoon south of La Savina. You can watch the birds and the boats at anchor. Ses Illetes is about fifteen minutes by car, and the port less than 10 minutes.
- Address: Camino de Can Marroig, s/n (Venda de Porto Saler), 07860 La Savina
- On Google Maps: get directions
- Booking rating: 8.4/10
- Price: from €93 a night, full details in our hotel page

My verdict: the Estany des Peix area is very quiet: you see the boats, the birds and beautiful sunsets. The hotel is a little away from the port, so I strongly recommend a bike, scooter or car. We had hired a car and stayed there in October. It is very good value for money, ideal if you want to move around the island, as long as you have transport. A bonus: Salitre restaurant, right next door, fairly expensive but with an exceptional view and a mouth-watering menu.
Apartamentos Sabina Playa, studios facing the Estany des Peix
Sabina Playa is La Savina’s well-located self-catering option. You can cook if you want, there is a pool, and the port is 50 metres away. It works for couples, families or friends, at decent prices for Formentera.
The residence sits on the edge of the Estany des Peix, the lagoon where small boats moor, a few steps from the ferry terminal. Sunsets over the lagoon are superb. Shops, hire companies and buses are within walking distance, and Ses Illetes is about 4 km away.
- Address: Avenida Mediterráneo, 2, 07870 La Savina
- On Google Maps: get directions
- Booking rating: 8.9/10
- Price: from €96 a night, full details in our hotel page

My verdict: in the evening, the light over the Estany des Peix lagoon is just incredible: it is one of the most beautiful views on the island, with the sunset and Es Vedrà in the distance. It is also one of the easiest bases for reaching the northern beaches without a car. Ideally located, I recommend it! Café del Lago, just below, is one of my favourite restaurants on the island.
Roquetes Rooms, seafront rooms in Sa Roqueta
Roquetes Rooms is all about the beach and peace and quiet. You are a few steps from the sea, in the Sa Roqueta dunes, with a pool and a restaurant on site so you do not have to get back on the scooter in the evening.
It is on Sa Roqueta beach, 500 m from Platja de ses Canyes and 900 m from the Estany Pudent lagoon. Es Pujols is 2 km away, Ses Illetes about 3 km.
- Address: Playa de Sa Roqueta, s/n, 07860 Es Pujols
- On Google Maps: get directions
- Booking rating: 8.7/10
- Price: from €100 a night, full details in our hotel page

My verdict: same area as Lago Playa: the sea is in front, the northern beaches are close, and in the evening you choose between peace and quiet and Es Pujols, 2 km away.
Hostal Bellavista, the practical address on La Savina harbour
The Bellavista is one of the first buildings you see as you get off the ferry. You stay here to be at the heart of the island without a car, not for the design: the style is retro, the management family-run, and the rooms are basic.
The hostal faces La Savina marina, between the ferry terminal and the Estany Pudent lagoon. Everything is on foot when you arrive: supermarkets, bike, scooter and car hire, bus stops. Ses Illetes is 4 km away, reachable by bike along the track beside the salt flats.
- Address: Puerto de La Savina, 07870 La Savina
- On Google Maps: get directions
- Booking rating: 7.3/10
- Price: from €106 a night, full details in our hotel page

My verdict: it is the most practical location on the island if you arrive without a car: you get off the ferry, drop your bags and hire bikes right next door. The track beside the salt flats takes you to Ses Illetes in about twenty minutes, and you can walk there too. For a one- or two-day escape to Formentera, or on a small budget, it is the ideal address for me. Tried twice and approved! The style is retro, it is true, but everything is very clean. If you want a pool or a designer room, look elsewhere.
Apartamentos Costamar II, studios with a pool in Es Pujols
Costamar II is Es Pujols’ well-kept studio option. You can cook, there is a pool, and the beach is a 5-minute walk. Practical for a stay for two without going broke on restaurants.
The residence is in the Punta Prima area, on the edge of Es Pujols. Es Pujols beach is 250 m away, and the centre and its restaurants a few minutes’ walk.
- Address: Calle Punta Prima, 56, 07872 Es Pujols
- On Google Maps: get directions
- Booking rating: 9.0/10
- Price: from €111 a night, full details in our hotel page

My verdict: Punta Prima is set back a little from the centre of Es Pujols, so quieter in the evening, while staying within walking distance of the beach and restaurants. It is a good compromise, and you stay close to the island’s most beautiful beaches.
Hotel Bahía, the terrace on La Savina harbour
The Bahía is the most comfortable address on La Savina harbour. People come for its terrace overlooking the boats and to arrive or leave stress-free, with the ferry a few steps away.
The hotel overlooks Passeig de la Marina, facing the pontoons. The Estany des Peix, the fishermen’s lagoon, is a 5-minute walk, and Cavall d’en Borràs beach, at the start of the Ses Illetes area, is a 20- to 25-minute walk.
- Address: Paseo de la Marina, 30, 07870 La Savina
- On Google Maps: get directions
- Booking rating: 9.0/10
- Price: from €133 a night, full details in our hotel page

My verdict: staying on La Savina harbour means having everything on foot: the ferry, bike and scooter hire, evening restaurants. The big advantage is being within cycling (and even walking) distance of Ses Illetes and Cavall d’en Borràs, without ever hunting for a parking space.
Lago Playa, between dunes and pines in Sa Roqueta
Lago Playa is a safe bet for Formentera regulars. It is quiet, behind the dunes, but two minutes by scooter from the buzz of Es Pujols. A simple, very island atmosphere.
The complex is in the Sa Roqueta area, between the sea and the Estany Pudent lagoon. You can walk to Sa Roqueta and Platja de ses Canyes beaches, and on towards Platja de Llevant. Es Pujols is 1 km away, Ses Illetes about 4 km.
- Address: Lago Playa, s/n, 07860 Es Pujols
- On Google Maps: get directions
- Booking rating: 8.5/10
- Price: from €136 a night, full details in our hotel page

My verdict: Sa Roqueta is the area I recommend for having the dunes and the sea at the door, while being two minutes by scooter from Es Pujols. You can walk to Ses Canyes and Llevant beaches.
Hotel Roca Bella, facing the sea at the end of Es Pujols bay
The Roca Bella does not look like much, but its location makes all the difference. You are facing the sea, in peace, and can walk into the centre of Es Pujols along the seafront. The atmosphere is simple, the Formentera of old.
The hotel closes off the northern end of Es Pujols bay. Es Pujols beach is at the door, and the lively centre about a 10-minute walk away. No need for a scooter to go out for dinner, and you sleep far from the noise of the bars.
- Address: Playa Es Pujols, s/n, 07871 Es Pujols
- On Google Maps: get directions
- Booking rating: 8.5/10
- Price: from €162 a night, full details in our hotel page

My verdict: the end of Es Pujols bay is my favourite kind of location in this village: facing the sea, in peace, with the centre a few minutes’ walk along the seafront. The spot is superb.
Hostal Maysi, feet in the sand at Es Arenals
The Maysi is the spot for Migjorn purists. You go from bed to sea in two minutes, on one of the most beautiful stretches of sand on the island, with the sound of the waves instead of scooters.
The hotel is at Mar y Land, in the Es Arenals area, at the eastern end of Migjorn beach. It is wilder and more spacious than Es Pujols. La Savina port is 13 km away: you will need a vehicle. The Riu Palace La Mola is right next door.
- Address: Camí des Arenals, Mar y Land, 07872 Formentera, Balearic Islands
- On Google Maps: get directions
- Price: from €183 a night, full details in our hotel page

My verdict: same area as the Riu, with Es Arenals beach at the door. The little harbour of Es Caló is a few minutes away, and the road to La Mola is close by for a trip to the lighthouse.
Hostal Sol y Mar, Migjorn beach at a small price
The Sol y Mar is the simple option on Migjorn beach, right next to the Gecko. Same beach, same turquoise water, for a much gentler budget.
The hostal is in the Es Ca Marí area, on Migjorn beach. The Gecko is its next-door neighbour. La Savina port is 9 km away, Sant Francesc 6 km.
- Address: Venda de Ca Marí, 3086, 07860 Platja de Migjorn
- On Google Maps: get directions
- Booking rating: 8.6/10
- Price: from €187 a night, full details in our hotel page

My verdict: Migjorn is 5 km of beach where you always find space, even in August. Here you are in total peace; just plan a vehicle for the rest of the island.
Hostal Pepe, the budget address in the heart of Sant Ferran
Hostal Pepe is a simple, well-kept address in the heart of Sant Ferran. You sleep here at a reasonable price, in the middle of the island, with a pool to unwind between beaches and the village on your doorstep.
The hostal is on Carrer Major, Sant Ferran’s main street, a few steps from Fonda Pepe. Es Pujols is 3 km away, Sant Francesc just over 3 km, and La Savina port about ten minutes by car. In season, the Sant Ferran art and craft market sets up in the village in the evening, Thursday to Saturday from 8pm to midnight (late May to late September in 2026).
- Address: Carrer Major (Calle Mayor), 68, 07871 Sant Ferran de ses Roques
- On Google Maps: get directions
- Booking rating: 8.8/10
- Price: for your dates on the listing, full details in our hotel page

My verdict: I stayed there in the middle of August, for budget reasons and because it is well located: it was very good, I recommend it! And there is the evening market in the village.

FAQ: cheap hotels in Formentera
Why choose a budget hotel in Formentera?
Choosing budget accommodation in Formentera lets you enjoy the island to the full without blowing your holiday budget. Rather than spending most of your budget on accommodation (which is often the case here), you can put it towards outings, restaurants and a few water sports, for example.
As Formentera is a fairly small island, staying in a simple hotel is still very practical: by scooter, car or even bike, you will quickly reach all the key areas of the island. These hotels usually offer basic but comfortable facilities, perfect for anyone mainly looking for a practical, well-located base.
Where can you find cheap hotels in Formentera?
Most budget hotels are concentrated in two main areas of the island:
La Savina: ideal if you arrive by ferry, close to the port and the first beaches such as Ses Illetes.
Es Pujols: the island’s “resort”, perfect for combining beach, restaurants and nightlife.
A few quieter alternatives:
Sant Francesc Xavier: the main village, charming and practical, with a few affordable places to stay.
Sant Ferran: another option I love, with a few affordable places and a more authentic village atmosphere. Right in the centre of the island, everything is easy.

The different types of budget accommodation
The island has several types of budget accommodation to suit everyone:
- “Hostals”: small family-run guesthouses, very common in Spain, offering simple rooms with good value for money.
- Small hotels: often near the port or Es Pujols, with basic services but everything you need for a pleasant stay.
- Apartments and studios: perfect for more independence, especially if you are travelling as a family or with friends and want to cook.
- Guesthouses: a friendly alternative that lets you meet locals or other travellers.
Tips for visiting Formentera on a small budget
- Book very early, especially if you are going in high summer (July-August).
- Go in the low season (May-June or September-October) for much more affordable rates.
- Hire a scooter or bike rather than a car (daily prices in our guide to getting around Ibiza and Formentera): not only is it kind to your wallet, it is also the best way to discover the island.
- For meals, head to local bars and restaurants serving simple, affordable dishes.
- Use supermarkets to prepare picnics for beach days and other outings.
What can you do in Formentera without spending too much?
Are the beaches free?
Of course: all Formentera’s beaches are free to access. It is the number one way to enjoy the island at no extra cost.
Can you get around easily without a car?
Hiring a bike or scooter is not only cheap but also the best way to explore the island simply.
Which free or cheap activities do we recommend?
- Watching the spectacular sunsets, especially at Cap de Barbaria or Cala Saona.
- Browsing the markets (Es Pujols, La Mola…).
- Exploring villages such as Sant Francesc and Sant Ferran.
- Hiking or cycling on the island’s green routes, which link the beaches.
Is Formentera more expensive than Ibiza?
Overall yes, especially in high season, but by choosing budget accommodation and keeping meals simple, it is quite possible to visit Formentera without spending too much. Accommodation is clearly the item to optimise in your budget.
Are Formentera’s budget hotels open all year? No, most close from November to March. The hotel season broadly runs from April to October, with services reopening gradually depending on the property.
