Bohemian Formentera: the 5 hippie markets not to miss

Montage photo des marchés artisanaux de Formentera

When people think of hippie markets, they often picture Ibiza. In Formentera, the bohemian spirit of the 1960s and 1970s is still very much alive: every summer, five markets turn the island’s squares and promenades into gatherings of craftspeople, with silver jewellery, ceramics, leather, linen and live music.

Key points

  • La Mola, the most authentic: Wednesday and Sunday, 4pm to 10pm, from early May to mid-October.
  • Sant Ferran: Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, from late May to late September.
  • Es Pujols and La Savina: every evening in season, by the water.
  • Sant Francesc: mornings Monday to Saturday, plus a second-hand market and a farmers’ market.
  • 2026 season: La Mola closed on 11 October, Es Pujols and Sant Francesc run until the end of October. They restart in early May.

Here are the island’s five markets, with their days and times for the 2026 season, what you will find and how to combine them. The dates come from the calendar published by Forbes in May 2026, cross-checked with the markets’ own pages.

1. La Mola market: the authentic, unmissable one

  • Where: Avinguda de la Mola, in El Pilar de la Mola, near the church
  • When: from 3 May to 11 October 2026, on Wednesdays and Sundays
  • Times: from about 4pm to 10pm, according to the official Fira Artesanal account
  • Getting there: scooter or car, or bus from La Savina

It is Formentera’s historic hippie market, born in the 1970s with the community that settled on the plateau. The Fira Artesanal brings together more than a hundred stalls of island craftspeople, according to Próximo Ferry: jewellery in silver and natural materials, ceramics, soaps, hand-sewn bags, hand-dyed or upcycled clothes, wooden sculptures. There is often live music, and a few drinks stalls let you make an evening of it.

It is not very big, but if you only do one, make it this one. Come in the late afternoon, browse the stalls before the crowds, then carry on to La Mola lighthouse, 2 km away, for the sunset. The market is entirely open-air: it can be cancelled in bad weather.

2. Sant Ferran market: evening art and crafts

  • Where: Carrer Major, the main street leading to the church of Sant Ferran de ses Roques
  • When: from 30 May to 26 September 2026, on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays
  • Times: 8pm to midnight
  • Combine with: dinner at Fonda Pepe, right next door

Just after dinner or for a stroll to settle your meal, this small market in the village centre is perfect. Less busy than La Mola, it has kept an intimate, very local feel: stalls run by designers, painters and artists who live on the island year-round line the main street. The pieces are unique and rarely available off the island.

A lovely spot to combine with dinner on the terrace at Fonda Pepe, a legendary institution of the hippie years. We actually stayed at the budget-friendly Hostal Pepe, right next door. To find out all about the village, see our overview of Sant Ferran in our guide to where to stay in Formentera.

3. Es Pujols hippie market, by the sea

  • Where: on the Es Pujols seafront promenade
  • When: every evening, from 1 May to 30 October 2026
  • Times: from about 7pm to midnight

It is the liveliest market on the island, in the heart of the resort where the nightlife is concentrated. You either love it or you don’t. Set along the promenade facing the sea, it is perfect if you are staying nearby: boho clothes, leather bags, bracelets and small souvenirs, with a very “summer holiday” vibe. It is also the most touristy of the five: compare before you buy.

4. Sant Francesc market, local art and produce

  • Craft market: Plaça de la Constitució, in front of the church, Monday to Saturday 10am to 2pm, from 1 May to 31 October 2026, with evening hours in July and August
  • Second-hand market: Jardí de ses Eres, behind the church, Tuesdays and Saturdays 10am to 2pm
  • Farmers’ market: Mercat Pagès, at the Antoni Tur “Gabrielet” centre, Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 9am, October to April

The heart of the island’s capital hosts its arts and crafts market on the church square: stalls by local artists, fashion, design and sustainably minded creations, next to permanent gallery-like shops. It is the ideal place for a more original piece or a nice gift, before a coffee on the square.

Beyond the art market, the second-hand market in the Jardí de ses Eres is probably the least busy on the island, but perhaps the most authentic: mostly private sellers, with a wide variety of objects. Out of season, the Mercat Pagès brings together the island’s farmers and producers selling direct: fruit and vegetables, cheese, charcuterie, honey. A way to discover the flavours of Formentera’s cuisine.

5. La Savina market, by the port

  • Where: on the Passeig de la Marina, the port promenade where the ferries dock
  • When: every day, from 18 May to 30 September 2026
  • Times: 11am to midnight

Located at the ferry port, this market is a must: people often wander round it on arrival or while waiting for the boat back. You will find some nice surprises: handmade jewellery, linen clothes, boho accessories. I have always found lovely gifts to bring home there! Boat times are in our Ibiza-Formentera ferry guide.

Our tips for making the most of Formentera’s markets

  • Arrive early to enjoy the stalls without the crowds, especially at La Mola on Sundays in August.
  • Bring cash: many craftspeople do not take cards.
  • Take time to chat with the makers: most live on the island and are happy to tell the story behind their pieces.
  • Combine with a sunset: La Mola lighthouse after the Fira, or the Es Pujols promenade before the evening market.
  • Check the weather: open-air markets can be cancelled in rain or strong wind.

These markets will give you unique souvenirs while supporting local crafts. Formentera’s hippie markets remain a must every summer. Which is your favourite?

After the market, fancy settling into a beautiful hotel? We tell you about Five Flowers, Formentera’s 5-star. To fill the rest of the day, all our outing ideas are in the guide to activities in Formentera, and the Ibiza side is in our guide to Ibiza’s hippie markets.
