The climate in Ibiza & Formentera
The climate of Ibiza and Formentera is hot, dry Mediterranean, which makes them ideal destinations for enjoying the sun for much of the year. Temperatures are high in summer and winter is very pleasant.
Ibiza and Formentera, the westernmost of the Balearics, are relatively sheltered from the north wind. While the archipelago is generally windy from October to April, summer is milder thanks to sea breezes that pleasantly cool the air.
What is the best time to go to Ibiza?
Ibiza is pleasant and can be visited all year round, but May, June, July and September are an excellent compromise: temperatures are mild, perfect for beaches and coves, and the island stays relatively peaceful before the August influx. Accommodation and flights are also often more affordable, which is no small thing. Flights are, however, less frequent than in high season.

Sun, blue skies and UV index
Ibiza and Formentera get more than 300 days of sunshine a year. In summer, the UV index is high (7 to 10), which means sun protection is essential, even when the wind makes the heat more bearable. Think of the environment and choose a sun cream that is kind to the seabed.
Ibiza and Formentera: how different is the terrain on the two islands?
Ibiza is a hilly island, with green hills mainly in the centre and north. Its landscape stands out for its steep cliffs, rocky ridges and spectacular viewpoints over the Mediterranean. The island’s highest point, Sa Talaia, reaches 475 metres. This mountainous geography creates many hidden coves reached by paths, and impressive Mediterranean panoramas.
Ibiza appeals as much to beach lovers as to hikers looking for wild landscapes.
Formentera, on the other hand, is an almost flat island, with a much gentler, horizontal landscape. Its highest point, the La Mola plateau, rises to just 192 metres. This modest relief is ideal for cycling and quiet holidays. Most of the island is plains, dunes and salt marshes, an unspoilt and peaceful natural setting. It is very easy to go round the island in a day.
In terms of size, Ibiza covers about 572 km², making it the third-largest Balearic island after Mallorca and Menorca. Formentera covers about 83 km², the smallest of the four main Balearic islands. The two islands are about 3.5 km apart.

Water and beach temperatures in Ibiza and Formentera
Although the sea is pleasant almost all year round, swimming is at its best from June to September.
In spring, especially in May, the water is still cool and bracing.
In high summer, between July and August, the sea reaches ideal temperatures of around 26 °C, and swimming is more than pleasant in almost lukewarm water.
In autumn, especially in September and October, the heat stored over the summer keeps swimming comfortable. Even in October, the water is surprisingly pleasant (I swam there at the end of October and it was great!).
From November to April, though, only the bravest will take the plunge: the water is cool, especially on windy days, but still fine for a quick dip with the right gear.
Info / tips
Shallow, sheltered coves such as Cala Saona or the small beaches around Es Caló in Formentera warm up faster: the water is often 1 to 2 °C warmer than in the open sea, especially in spring.

Tides in Ibiza and Formentera
There are tides in Ibiza and Formentera, as in all seas connected to the Atlantic Ocean. However, water-level variations are quite small in the Balearics, generally around 20 to 40 centimetres.
The phenomenon is therefore much less marked than on the Atlantic or on some coasts. Tides do not have a very visible impact on the beaches or water sports on these islands, but they do exist.
The advantages of the off-season
There are plenty of advantages to swimming off-season in Ibiza and Formentera, or simply enjoying the islands:
- Deserted beaches and still-warm water: the water stays at 22-23 °C until October-November. You have iconic beaches such as Ses Illetes or Migjorn almost to yourself, without the summer crowds. Not bad for some lovely Instagram shots…
- Unbeatable prices: accommodation often costs two to three times less than in August, so you can aim higher without blowing the budget. (Even in high season, I have good tips for hotels on smaller budgets.)
- Authentic atmosphere restored: locals take the islands back, restaurants become genuine again instead of tourist traps, and you discover local life.
- Legendary spots in private mode: sunsets at Café del Mar or facing Es Vedrà are almost deserted, and you enjoy activities in crystal-clear water in very small groups.
- Beach clubs closed = total freedom: no more paying €15 for a sangria (or even €25 or €35…), you can sip your drink with your feet in the sand on an empty beach

What is the best season for partying in Ibiza and Formentera?
Ibiza’s nightlife calendar
May-June: the euphoria of the opening parties
Spring marks the reawakening of Ibiza’s nights. The May-June opening parties are legendary: Pacha, Amnesia and Ushuaïa reopen with exceptional line-ups. Fewer tourists than in high summer, more reasonable prices, shorter queues and often more cutting-edge programming. The atmosphere is electric, with regulars and music-industry professionals.
July-August: the peak of nightlife madness
Summer is the absolute peak. Ibiza becomes the world capital of electronic music, drawing the biggest DJs. Clubs at full throttle 7 days a week, boat parties, beach clubs, legendary residencies. The full experience, but with its downsides: sky-high prices, huge crowds and a much more commercial atmosphere.
That said, a night with a DJ you love is still an incredible experience to have at least once! (For example, I spent a night at Ushuaïa for David Guetta, and it was just amazing!)
September-October: the closing parties
This is the end of the season with the famous closing parties. The atmosphere becomes more intimate again, prices fall and there are fewer people. Many consider it the best period: one last party before the clubs close, ideal for enjoying Ibiza’s authenticity without the summer crowds. The 2026 closing dates and the month’s village fiestas are in our Ibiza October events guide.
Formentera: the chilled alternative
Formentera takes a much smoother approach to nightlife. In summer, the iconic chiringuitos (beach bars such as Kiosko 62, the Blue Bar and Piratabus) liven up the island around sunset. Lounge music in an idyllic setting, slightly more accessible prices, a bohemian atmosphere. I love these beach evenings, which have a magic of their own.
My advice: choose May-June or September-October if you want authenticity with fewer crowds, July-August to experience Ibiza to the full despite the crowds and prices, and Formentera if you prefer a festive but laid-back atmosphere.
