All along Formentera’s south coast, Platja de Migjorn unrolls almost six kilometres of sand: it is the island’s longest beach. A series of coves and long strips of sand, dotted with legendary chiringuitos such as the Blue Bar, a legacy of the hippie era. Here you choose your spot according to your mood, from the liveliest to the most deserted.
Migjorn stretches for about 6 km along the south coast, making it a world of its own rather than just a beach. It alternates sandy sections and rockier areas, with very different atmospheres from one point to another. It is the beach you come back to again and again without ever seeing the same face.

About Platja de Migjorn
Migjorn’s strength is its variety. Over six kilometres, you go from long, almost deserted stretches of fine sand to more intimate coves, via the areas around the chiringuitos where life gathers. Overall it stays wild, away from development, and some sections are popular with naturists.
It is also a beach where you can walk for a long time along the water, changing atmosphere as the kilometres go by. For another, more secluded and spectacular spot, do not miss the hidden Estany des Peix on the lagoon side, in a completely different style.

Migjorn’s chiringuitos
Migjorn is inseparable from its beach bars, some of which have become true institutions. The most famous is the Blue Bar, recognisable by its structure painted entirely blue, a hippie haunt since the 1960s and a symbol of the most authentic Formentera. Having a drink there at sunset is part of the island experience.
Other places dot the beach, such as the Gitana chiringuito, more informal and laid-back, or Karai, a small bar a few metres from the water, ideal for lunch or a drink in a friendly atmosphere. Each has its own vibe: just park near the one that suits your mood that day.

Access and parking at Migjorn
To get to Migjorn, follow the PM-820 from La Savina port along the whole south coast. Given the length of the beach, there is not one access point but several: car parks are usually near the chiringuitos, which serve as landmarks along the coast.
The trick is to choose your entry point according to the bar or atmosphere you want, then park as close as possible. If you are coming from Ibiza, plan the crossing with our complete guide to the Ibiza-Formentera ferry, then rent a vehicle in La Savina to reach the south coast.

Activities and good practice
Migjorn is made for swimming, long walks and relaxing facing the open sea. Its southern orientation makes it a lovely sunset spot, especially from the Blue Bar. As the beach is exposed, check the day’s wind: in calm weather the water is limpid; in strong wind, some sections get rougher.

Where to stay near Migjorn
Given the length of the beach, staying on site really makes a difference: you save the car journeys and enjoy sunsets without watching the clock. Three places sum up the options in the area well.
- Gecko Formentera: the upmarket reference in the area, a member of Small Luxury Hotels, a few hundred metres from the sand. For a couple’s stay, without entertainment or a club formula.
- Insotel Hotel Formentera Playa: the big beachfront complex, club formula and full services. The practical choice for families, as long as you are fine with a resort atmosphere.
- Hotel Ca Marí: more modest and quieter, 500 m from the beach. The sensible compromise between budget and proximity.

One thing to plan for: Migjorn stretches over six kilometres and accommodation is spread along the coast. Check where on the beach you will end up, as the atmosphere changes completely from one end to the other, and the chiringuito you had in mind may be twenty minutes’ drive away.
