Cala Salada / Saladeta

North of Sant Antoni, Cala Salada and its little sister Cala Saladeta are one of the most beautiful pairs of coves on Ibiza’s west coast. Crystal-clear water shifting from turquoise to deep blue, pine woods running down to the sand, fishermen’s huts: you are far from the bustle of the neighbouring bay. The flip side of this beauty is deliberately limited access in summer, which you need to plan for.

Cala Salada is a few kilometres north of Sant Antoni de Portmany, on the west coast. It is a sheltered inlet with calm, shallow water, ideal for swimming and snorkelling. Right next door, reachable on foot, Cala Saladeta is smaller, wilder and often considered the more photogenic of the two.

About Cala Salada and Cala Saladeta

Cala Salada is the bigger and more accessible of the two. The sand is mixed with rocky areas, the water remarkably transparent, and a few wooden fishermen’s huts on the right give the place its character. The pine woods framing the cove provide natural shade, a rarity on Ibiza’s beaches.

Cala Saladeta takes a little more effort. You reach it along a rocky path on the right of Cala Salada, about ten minutes’ walk that is not always easy in flip-flops. It is worth it: intense turquoise water, a wilder atmosphere, fewer people. It is the kind of place where you lay down your towel for the day.

Both coves are perfect for snorkelling: clear water, rocky seabeds full of marine life and a generally calm sea. If you like exploring with a mask, you can easily spend the afternoon there. For other wild coves in the same spirit, take a look at Cala Gració, very close by, or Cala Comte a little further south.

Access and parking at Cala Salada

This is the point you absolutely need to know. To protect the site, the Sant Antoni council restricts car traffic in high season. In practice, from early May to around mid-October, the access road is closed to private vehicles during the day, roughly from 9.30am to 5pm. Past this checkpoint, only scooters, taxis, people with reduced mobility and customers with a restaurant booking can drive down to the cove.

The recommended solution in summer: park at the free car park of the Can Coix sports complex in Sant Antoni and take the shuttle to the beach. It is free and simple, and saves you driving around in circles. Another option if you plan to have lunch there: booking a table at the Cala Salada restaurant lets you drive down and park near the cove.

Out of season, the road is open and parking at the top of the cove is easy. My advice is the same everywhere on the west coast: come early in the morning or late in the afternoon, for parking as well as for the light.

Food and services on site

On the left of Cala Salada, a family restaurant overlooks the cove. It serves rice dishes, fish and traditional Spanish food in an unbeatable setting facing the sea. It is the only real place in the bay, so in summer it is best to book, especially as a booking gives you car access.

At Saladeta, on the other hand, there are no services: no bar, no sunbed hire. You come with your towel, water and picnic, and that is precisely its charm. Plan accordingly, especially in the heat of the day, as shade is limited.

Activities and good practice

Beyond swimming and snorkelling, Cala Salada is a great starting point for kayaking: following the coast north reveals coves you cannot reach on foot. Several sunset boat trips from Sant Antoni also stop here. To organise this kind of trip, our guide to activities in Ibiza lists the good options.

If you want to explore the west coast without moving every night, look at Sant Antoni and the surrounding area for somewhere to stay: our Ibiza hotel guide will help you choose. And to end the day, this whole coast faces due west: Cala Salada offers a memorable sunset, without the crowds of the better-known spots.
