United Airlines has just announced a direct route between New York and Ibiza from summer 2027, a first for a US airline on the destination.

Key points: from 31 May 2027, United Airlines will link New York (via Newark Liberty International Airport) and Ibiza with 4 direct flights a week, until 7 October 2027. It is the first time a US airline has served Ibiza nonstop.

Ibiza-New York route: United Airlines’ big announcement!

The announcement was made at an event at Newark airport, in the presence of CEO Scott Kirby. Ibiza is on the list of 10 new international destinations for 2027, presented by the airline as the biggest expansion in its history!
Tickets went on sale the same day on united.com.

It is a seasonal flight, not a year-round route. Of United’s 5 new A321XLR routes for 2027, only 2 (Luxembourg and Toulouse) run all year.
Ibiza, like Valencia, Marseille, Catania and Olbia, will only operate during the tourist season.

Why the Airbus A321XLR changes the game for a direct Ibiza-New York route

For this route, the airline is not using a classic wide-body (such as a Boeing 777), but the Airbus A321XLR.

  • What is it? Unlike large twin-aisle aircraft, the A321XLR is a single-aisle aircraft (one central aisle, like the planes used on short and medium-haul routes).
  • Record range: thanks to optimised fuel tanks, it can fly up to 8,700 km (about 11 hours) and cross the Atlantic.
  • The “thin route” concept: this aircraft is ideal for linking destinations such as Ibiza, where tourist demand is strong but not enough to fill a giant wide-body.

The cabin layout on this route, as announced by United:

  • 20 Polaris seats (business, lie-flat, individual privacy door)
  • 12 Premium Plus seats (premium economy)
  • 36 Economy Plus seats (extra legroom)
  • 82 standard Economy seats

That is 32 premium seats out of 150, more than a fifth of the cabin. By comparison, the Boeing 757 it replaces on this type of route had only 16 Polaris seats and no Premium Plus. United almost doubles its premium capacity on this route, which says a lot about the target market: free Starlink wifi for MileagePlus members and 4K OLED screens complete the package.

Ibiza: the only Spanish island served directly by a US airline

Ibiza becomes the only Spanish destination served nonstop by a US airline. Palma de Mallorca does have direct flights to New York, but they are operated by Norse Atlantic, a Norwegian long-haul low-cost airline, not an American one. Delta Air Lines had considered launching Ibiza last year before choosing other destinations. So United grabs a spot its direct rival let slip.

United is not alone in this bet. Other airlines are going after the same niche with this aircraft:

  • Delta already links New York with Catania (Sicily) and Olbia (Sardinia).
  • American Airlines will launch flights to Porto and Vienna in 2027.
  • TAP Air Portugal is doing the same between Boston and Porto, while also serving the Azores.

What do they have in common? They all use this type of aircraft to link islands and mid-sized cities in the Mediterranean or the Atlantic directly with the United States, places that had never had a direct flight before.

Ibiza is part of a major trend that is transforming travel across the Mediterranean.

The rest of United’s 2027 expansion

Ibiza is one of 10 new cities, 8 of which are not served by any other US airline:

What does it mean for tourism in Ibiza?

The official line is unanimous: Fomento del Turismo de Ibiza speaks of a “strategic milestone”, the Federación Hotelera Pitiusa welcomes a diversification of markets, and the Consell d’Eivissa talks of an “extraordinary opportunity”.
The real figures deserve a closer look before getting carried away.

More and more Americans…
American tourists love Ibiza and their numbers are booming. In May 2026, there were 21.7% more than in May 2025. They are already the island’s 7th market (almost 76,000 travellers in 2024).

…but they spend less than expected
People often imagine Americans spend without counting, but the official 2025 figures show the opposite:

  • On average, an American spends €310 on the island.
  • That is more than the British (€275) or the French (€263)…
  • but less than other Europeans, such as the Swiss (€441) or the Dutch (€342).

So the myth of the American tourist who outspends everyone else in Ibiza needs nuancing! The president of the Consell d’Eivissa, Vicent Marí, was careful to present this route as compatible with the tourism containment policy already in place on the island (freeze on tourist beds, vehicle restrictions, crackdown on illegal rentals): the stated aim is to increase tourist spending without increasing the number of overnight stays. It remains to be seen whether the equation holds in practice.

While the new route delights the island, it also raises serious concerns. The day after the announcement, Periódico de Ibiza stayed neutral, but online reactions show a very worried local population.

With housing in Ibiza already extremely difficult for residents, many fear that wealthier American visitors will push property prices and rents even higher.

For now, no association or political figure has officially attacked this particular flight. Movements against overtourism do exist on the island, but they have not yet mobilised specifically against this United Airlines route.

The announcement is still very recent: it is a story to watch closely in the coming weeks.

How do you find the best flight to Ibiza?

Now that there are more and more ways to reach the island, you still need to find the best fare. Two tools well known to travellers are particularly useful:

  • Skyscanner: the “whole month” view is still the best way to spot the cheapest days to reach Ibiza, whatever the airline.
  • Booking Flights: handy if you also book your accommodation with them, with a built-in flight comparison tool.

Once you have landed at Ibiza airport, you still need to organise what comes next: I have detailed the airport transfer and shuttle options in a separate guide, and if you are aiming for exactly the kind of upmarket stay this new route targets, my guide to luxury boutique hotels in Ibiza is a good place to start.

FAQ

When does United Airlines launch its direct New York-Ibiza flight?

The first flight is scheduled for 31 May 2027, with seasonal operation until 7 October 2027. It is not a year-round route.

How many flights a week between Newark and Ibiza?

United Airlines announces 4 direct weekly flights between Newark (EWR) and Ibiza (IBZ), operated by an Airbus A321XLR.

Are ticket prices already known?

No launch fare was officially communicated by United Airlines at the time of the 25 August 2026 announcement. Sales are open on united.com, but exact prices are worth watching as summer 2027 approaches.

Is Ibiza the only Mediterranean island getting a new direct link with the United States?

No. United is opening flights to Olbia (Sardinia) and Catania (Sicily) at the same time, and Delta Air Lines already serves these two Italian cities from New York. It is a wider industry trend affecting several Mediterranean islands and secondary cities, not an isolated case.

Will this new route push up property prices in Ibiza?

It is a fear expressed in many local public comments, at a time when Ibiza’s property and rental market is already under heavy strain. No quantified impact study exists so far, and no local stakeholder has taken an official, named position on this specific point.
