Es Portitxol

Es Portitxol is a wild, unspoilt cove in the north of Ibiza, in the municipality of Sant Joan de Labritja, near Sant Miquel. This small sheltered inlet stands out for its crystal-clear turquoise water, its typical pebbles and its authentic character, which make it one of the most sought-after secret beaches in Ibiza.

Reachable only on foot after a 20 to 30-minute coastal hike, Es Portitxol offers a unique experience for visitors seeking peace and unspoilt Mediterranean scenery.

In short: a cove that is very hard to reach, requiring a long walk on a steep path. The shore is made of pebbles and gravel, and the water is a deep blue. Its isolation ensures almost total tranquillity, even in midsummer. Many rustic fishermen’s huts are lined up along it. It is for hikers and explorers who are not afraid of effort. An unspoilt spot with no facilities at all. It rewards those looking for solitude and untouched scenery.

Es Portitxol: an authentic cove with turquoise water

Es Portitxol, whose name means “the little port” in Ibizan, is a tiny natural inlet sheltered from wind and waves. Nestled between imposing cliffs and Mediterranean pine woods, this cove, 40 to 80 metres long, is made of pebbles and gravel. Its crystal-clear, intensely turquoise water makes it a popular spot for swimming and snorkelling. The rocky seabed slopes gradually, with remarkable visibility for observing marine life.

The beach stands out for its traditional fishermen’s huts, still in use today, lining the crescent-shaped shore. Es Portitxol has no tourist infrastructure, which preserves its wild, authentic character. Remember to bring water, food and water shoes to make the most of this experience in the wild.

Getting to Es Portitxol: a coastal hike is a must

To get to Es Portitxol by car, head for Sant Miquel, then follow the road towards Sant Mateu. Continue to the Isla Blanca development and drive through it. When the road gets worse, park on a small area with room for 3 or 4 cars (look for the stone wall with a blue arrow marking the path).

From there, a well-marked footpath about 1 metre wide follows the coast for 20 to 30 minutes. This gradual descent through the pine woods offers spectacular views of the cove and the surrounding cliffs.

Water activities and hiking around Es Portitxol

From Es Portitxol, visitors enjoy a breathtaking view of the sheer cliffs framing the cove, a natural amphitheatre. The panorama over the Mediterranean and Ibiza’s north coast alone is worth the trip.

The cove is particularly popular for snorkelling and free diving thanks to its transparent water and rocky seabed full of marine life. The surrounding hiking paths let you explore the area and admire the typical Mediterranean vegetation. Some visitors also use the fishermen’s huts for shade when they are not in use.
