Cala d’Es Cubells

Cala d’es Cubells is a wild cove in south-west Ibiza, nestled at the foot of the cliffs below the village of Es Cubells, in the municipality of Sant Josep de sa Talaia.

Divided into three separate parts by rocky outcrops, this pebble beach has transparent water and an unspoilt setting, away from the tourist bustle. It is above all for travellers looking for silence and nature.

In short: it is not a classic sandy beach, but rather a small stretch of rocky, pebbly coast below the village of Es Cubells. It is very discreet and mainly used by the few residents and local fishermen. It is ideal for diving and snorkelling thanks to the very clear water and rocky seabed. The spot offers absolute peace and magnificent views of the coast. It has no facilities and is not that easy to reach, which guarantees its isolated, peaceful character.

Three pebble coves between cliffs and turquoise water

Cala d’es Cubells is a series of three small coves separated by rock formations, framed by cliffs that plunge straight into the sea. Around 300 metres long and about ten metres wide, the beach is mainly made of pebbles and medium-sized rocks, with a few sandy patches at the back. The water is very clear, alternating between sandy and rocky bottoms from the first few metres, making it popular for snorkelling. It gets deep quickly from the shore, suiting both confident swimmers and fans of underwater exploring.

There is no hire service on site: bring your own equipment. A pair of water shoes will also make it easier to get around on the rocks. The lack of organised services is precisely what keeps the cove unspoilt and peaceful.

For food, the neighbouring cove of Ses Boques has a family beach restaurant serving traditional Ibizan specialities: fresh fish, tapas and local wines. A simple, authentic spot, open in summer, ideal for extending the day without leaving the coast.

Heading back up to the village of Es Cubells, you can also stop in the centre, which has a few restaurants that preserve the island’s culinary and architectural essence.

Practical access and parking at Cala d’es Cubells

From the village of Es Cubells, simply follow the signposted turn-off to the left of the main square. The road is surfaced all the way, but it descends steeply to the shore. Parking near the beach access is extremely limited: arrive early in high season to find a space easily. Once you have parked, a short walk down a fairly steep path takes you to the cove!

A bus serves the village of Es Cubells from Sant Josep de sa Talaia, so you can make the trip without a car in summer. Check the timetable in advance, as services can be infrequent.

Snorkelling, coastal walks and wild discoveries around Cala d’es Cubells

From the cove, the view stretches along the Porroig coast and, on clear days, as far as Formentera. The cliffs around the site create a striking panorama, especially at the end of the day when golden light falls on the rocks. It is a place where you take time to look at the sea…

On site, snorkelling is the star activity: the mix of sand and rock is home to varied marine life, accessible even to beginners thanks to the clarity and relative calm of the water. For walkers, the coast around Es Cubells has paths linking other hard-to-reach coves such as Cala Llentrisca and Ses Boques, each with its own character. The village of Es Cubells itself is worth a visit: its 19th-century church and clifftop viewpoint offer one of the most striking views of the Mediterranean in the south of the island.

Cala d’es Cubells is a cove you have to earn. Getting there takes a little effort, and that is precisely why it is worth the detour. For anyone looking for a beach day far from sunbeds and beach-club playlists, it is probably one of the finest experiences the south of Ibiza has to offer.
